Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 AppArmor race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as very critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component AppArmor. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-72462. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component AppArmor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: apparmor: fix race in unix socket mediation when peer_path is used The holding a reference to the peer_sk is not enough to ensure access to the peer sk path. Accessing the path outside of the state lock allows for a race with unix_release_sock(). Fix this by taking the state lock and getting a reference to the path under lock. Ideally for connected sockets we would cache this information so we don't have to take the lock here. But for now just fix the race.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-72462 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d8ea44f6090c087fe255d9512fb808574b4d88e8/d680472db98823d90fc91362910901e468269318/b1aea2c1960771a276d7e68c7424168eccd0c3da is able to eliminate this problem.
