Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Firebird SQL Server 1.5.3.4870/1.5.4.4910 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects the function svc_attach. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Firebird LI 1.5.3.4870 and 1.5.4.4910, and WI 1.5.3.4870 and 1.5.4.4910, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long service attach request on TCP port 3050 to the SVC_attach function or (2) unspecified vectors involving the INET_connect function.
The weakness was released 10/06/2007 by Adriano Lima with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5245 since 10/06/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/08/2019).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26937 (FreeBSD : firebird -- multiple remote buffer overflow vulnerabilities (91ed69f9-72c7-11dc-981a-001921ab2fa4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8566.
