Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Sun JDK and JRE up to 6u2 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 Update 2 and earlier, JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 12 and earlier, SDK and JRE 1.4.2_15 and earlier, and SDK and JRE 1.3.1_20 and earlier, when Firefox or Opera is used, allows remote attackers to violate the security model for JavaScript outbound connections via a multi-pin DNS rebinding attack dependent on the LiveConnect API, in which JavaScript download relies on DNS resolution by the browser, but JavaScript socket operations rely on separate DNS resolution by a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), a different issue than CVE-2007-5273. NOTE: this is similar to CVE-2007-5232.
The bug was discovered 10/03/2007. The weakness was presented 10/08/2007 by Collin Jackson (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5274 since 10/08/2007. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32013 (GLSA-200804-20 : Sun JDK/JRE: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165686 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update IBM Java (SUSE-SA:2008:025)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
