Details
A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component IVR Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in a DLL file in RealNetworks RealPlayer 10, RealPlayer 10.5 6.0.12.1040 through 6.0.12.1741, RealPlayer 11 11.0.0 through 11.0.4, RealPlayer Enterprise, Mac RealPlayer 10 and 10.1, Linux RealPlayer 10, and Helix Player 10.x allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Internet Video Recording (IVR) file with a filename length field containing a large integer, which triggers overwrite of an arbitrary memory location with a 0x00 byte value, related to use of RealPlayer through a Windows Explorer plugin.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2009. The weakness was presented 02/10/2009 by Haifei Li with Fortinet (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at fortiguardcenter.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0375 since 01/30/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44119 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.0.319 Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116821 (RealPlayer Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8755.
