eXtremail 2.1.1 Admin Interface ifProcImapAuth1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in eXtremail 2.1.1. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function ifProcImapAuth1 of the component Admin Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in eXtremail 2.1.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to (1) have an unknown impact by sending multiple long strings to the IMAP port (143/tcp); (2) execute arbitrary code via a long string in an IMAP AUTHENTICATE PLAIN action, involving the ifParseAuthPlain function; (3) execute arbitrary code via a long LOGIN command to the admin interface port (4501/tcp); or (4) execute arbitrary code via a long string in an IMAP AUTHENTICATE LOGIN (aka CRAM-MD5 authentication) action, involving the ifProcImapAuth1 function.

The weakness was shared 10/15/2007 with mu-b (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5466 since 10/15/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/07/2024).

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74230 (eXtremail Multiple Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37209), Exploit-DB (4533), SecurityFocus (BID 26074†), OSVDB (41765†) and Secunia (SA27220†). The entry VDB-39275 is related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
