Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in FreeBSD ZFS up to p0.x/p6/p10/p15. Affected is the function ZFS_IOC_USERSPACE_MANY. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ZFS_IOC_USERSPACE_MANY ioctl, used by zfs-userspace(8), truncated a 64-bit output buffer size to a 32-bit integer for the kernel allocation, but used the original 64-bit size as the buffer limit when writing records. A local user with the "userused" delegated ZFS permission can trigger a kernel heap overflow via the ZFS_IOC_USERSPACE_MANY ioctl, potentially escalating privileges.
The advisory is available at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-49429 since 05/29/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/19/2026).
