Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in FreeBSD Kernel up to p0.x/p6/p10/p15. Affected by this issue is the function open/fspacectl of the component Largepage Objects. The manipulation of the argument O_TRUNC with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Certain system calls, such open(2) with the O_TRUNC flag set, and fspacectl(2), could incorrectly free memory in largepage objects. These operations are not permitted on largepage objects, but the implementation did not verify this. An unprivileged local user can abuse the bug to access freed kernel memory. This can be exploited to escalate privileges.
The advisory is available at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-49428 since 05/29/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/19/2026).
