Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeRDP up to 3.26.x. Affected by this issue is the function rpc_channel_read of the file libfreerdp/core/gateway/rpc_bind.c of the component RPC Gateway. The manipulation of the argument max_xmit_frag with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to 3.27.0, FreeRDP clients using TS Gateway accept a server-controlled max_xmit_frag value in libfreerdp/core/gateway/rpc_bind.c without bounding it to the 4088-byte ReceiveFragment allocation. A malicious gateway can advertise 65535 and then send a response fragment of the same length, causing rpc_channel_read in libfreerdp/core/gateway/rpc.c to write up to 65535 bytes into the smaller ReceiveFragment buffer. This can crash the client and may permit code execution through attacker-controlled heap corruption. This issue is fixed in version 3.27.0.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-55193 since 06/16/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 3.27.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
