Macrovision SafeDisc prior 4.3.86.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Macrovision SafeDisc. This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Macrovision SafeDisc secdrv.sys before 4.3.86.0, as shipped in Microsoft Windows XP SP2, XP Professional x64 and x64 SP2, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 x64 and x64 SP2 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary memory locations and gain privileges via a crafted argument to a METHOD_NEITHER IOCTL, as originally discovered in the wild.

The weakness was shared 10/17/2007 by Elia Florio with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-5587 since 10/19/2007. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28185 (Macrovision SafeDisc secdrv.sys Crafted METHOD_NEITHER IOCTL Local Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115657 (Macrovision SECDRV.SYS Driver Vulnerability on Windows Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (MS07-067)).

Upgrading to version 4.3.86.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37284), Zero-Day.cz (234), Tenable (28185), SecurityFocus (BID 26121†) and OSVDB (41429†). The entry VDB-40004 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
