Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Drupal 5.2 (Content Management System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file install.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
install.php in Drupal 5.x before 5.3, when the configured database server is not reachable, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors that cause settings.php to be modified.
The bug was discovered 10/17/2007. The weakness was disclosed 10/17/2007 by Stefan Esser with Drupal Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5593 since 10/19/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
