Drupal 5.2 install.php code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Drupal 5.2 (Content Management System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file install.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

install.php in Drupal 5.x before 5.3, when the configured database server is not reachable, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors that cause settings.php to be modified.

The bug was discovered 10/17/2007. The weakness was disclosed 10/17/2007 by Stefan Esser with Drupal Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5593 since 10/19/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:install.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27551 (FreeBSD : drupal --- multiple vulnerabilities (9c00d446-8208-11dc-9283-0016179b2dd5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37265), Tenable (27551), SecurityFocus (BID 26119†), OSVDB (39648†) and Secunia (SA27290†). The entries VDB-39381, VDB-39380, VDB-39379 and VDB-39378 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
