A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Canonical Apport up to 2.28.3/2.34.1/2.35.x. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component apport-unpack. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Path traversal in apport-unpack in Canonical Apport before 2.36.0, 2.34.2, and 2.28.4 on Linux allows an attacker to create or overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the executing user via an attacker controlled key names in crash report files.
