Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Simple Machines Forum 1.0.11/1.1.3 (Forum Software). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument userspec with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SQL injection vulnerability in Sources/Search.php in Simple Machines Forum (SMF) 1.1.3, when MySQL 5 is used, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the userspec parameter in a search2 action to index.php.
The bug was discovered 10/19/2007. The weakness was presented 10/23/2007 by Michael Brooks (Website). The advisory is shared at simplemachines.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5646 since 10/23/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27585 (Simple Machines Forum Search.php SQL Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
