Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in hashcat up to 7.1.2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function fgetl of the file src/filehandling.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
hashcat's fgetl() function in src/filehandling.c writes a null terminator one byte past the caller's buffer when an input line is exactly the buffer length. Attackers can trigger this out-of-bounds heap write by providing a hash file, potfile, or wordlist containing a line of exactly HCBUFSIZ_LARGE bytes.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-68767 since 07/31/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
