Summary
A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in NLTK up to 3.9.4. This impacts the function validate_network_url of the file nltk/pathsec.py. Executing a manipulation can lead to server-side request forgery.
This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-63311. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in NLTK up to 3.9.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function validate_network_url of the file nltk/pathsec.py. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
NLTK before 3.10.0 (affected versions <= 3.9.4) contains a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the validate_network_url() function in nltk/pathsec.py. The _resolve_hostname() helper catches OSError and ValueError during socket.getaddrinfo() and returns an empty list; when DNS resolution fails, the validation loop executes no IP checks and the function fails open, allowing urlopen() to proceed without validation. An attacker who can trigger DNS resolution failures or use DNS rebinding can bypass SSRF protections and reach restricted network resources, including cloud metadata endpoints (e.g., 169.254.169.254).
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-63311 since 07/16/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 3.10.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
