Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.103/6.18.44/7.1.8. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bpf_get_fsverity_digest of the component fsverity. Executing a manipulation of the argument digest_size can lead to race condition.
This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-74590. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.103/6.18.44/7.1.8. This vulnerability affects the function bpf_get_fsverity_digest of the component fsverity. The manipulation of the argument digest_size with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fsverity: Fix bpf_get_fsverity_digest() dynptr assumptions The BPF verifier and the dynptr abstraction ensure that the memory space referenced by a dynptr remains valid. They do not, however, provide any guarantee that the contents of the memory are stable. kfuncs are expected to remain memory-safe even if concurrent modifications occur. bpf_get_fsverity_digest() didn't follow that: it could crash if arg->digest_size was concurrently modified. Fix that by using the known-good value hash_alg->digest_size instead. Also widen 'dynptr_sz' and 'out_digest_sz' to u64 to match the return type of __bpf_dynptr_size(). It doesn't appear that it can actually be more than INT_MAX currently (since __bpf_dynptr_data_rw() excludes file-based pointers), but the correct type might as well be used.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-74590 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 343049 (Oracle Linux 10 / 9 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2026-500248)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.104, 6.18.45 or 7.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1344b632cb5043e32939a84568125719111c5af3/2a5cfcad1d56e26d645b7887b0ed24c371851525/5bd63cad9df4328a184c409fbdad4f17944bcdb8/3e8ec7c0387273329374f5c7bd61f5f38af71fe1 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (343049) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-2970). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
