Linux Kernel up to 6.18.44/7.1.8 usbio usbio_bulk_msg comparison

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as very critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.44/7.1.8. Affected by this issue is the function usbio_bulk_msg of the component usbio. Performing a manipulation results in comparison. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-74681. The attack is only possible with local access. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.44/7.1.8. This affects the function usbio_bulk_msg of the component usbio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a comparison vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-697. The product compares two entities in a security-relevant context, but the comparison is incorrect, which may lead to resultant weaknesses. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: misc: usbio: check ibuf_len against rxbuf_len in bulk msg ibuf_len is the bulk IN (receive) buffer size, but the EMSGSIZE check in usbio_bulk_msg() compares it against txbuf_len — the bulk OUT endpoint size. Both are taken independently from different endpoints in usbio_probe(), so the check is wrong when they differ. Use rxbuf_len for the IN direction. This matches the buffer that actually holds the response data.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-74681 since 08/15/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/22/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.45 or 7.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ebfd1e82ab0a6d26efd9bdd89de899215851f5bf/9ad0164f78b66b0b5eca3a5748cc94dd87e28124/7e22c9f79b200672f3e477421b6c9050d8cf70a5 is able to eliminate this problem.
