Linux Kernel up to 7.1.8 evdev evdev_pass_values information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.8. It has been declared as problematic. This affects the function evdev_pass_values of the component evdev. Such manipulation leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-74673. An attack has to be approached locally. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.8 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function evdev_pass_values of the component evdev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: evdev - fix information leak in evdev_pass_values() In evdev_pass_values(), the input_event structure is allocated on the kernel stack and populated field-by-field. However, it is never fully initialized. On architectures where struct input_event contains explicit or implicit padding (such as the 32-bit __pad field on SPARC64), these padding bytes are left uninitialized. When this event structure is subsequently passed to the client buffer and later copied to userspace, the uninitialized padding bytes leak kernel stack memory, potentially exposing sensitive information. Similar issues exist in __evdev_queue_syn_dropped and __pass_event. Fix this by explicitly zeroing the entire event structure with memset() before populating its fields. This ensures all padding bytes are cleared before the data crosses the security boundary.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-74673 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 5.10.265, 5.15.216, 6.1.183, 6.6.152, 6.12.104, 6.18.45 or 7.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d2e3839419ac4047835762c4d7712bda1101b57e/c6d5fa46c1ee25d068fc730fd377f0f54188d290/e748811d9b80a3e101110ff4b3c612e5fca54d98/06a286b320236508d02ab2ccc9496352748652a8/7d17e9454a9af3ec7aebb88b41a9deedd5b19a6b/bd3c4108a56de34380edab670065e86283cb3029/7e55ca1080f09d9f7112c7f20ac31f682c1f2374/90f305f2c7a30257c683e13f4bf7c798eea992a0 is able to eliminate this problem.
