Integer overflow in the FORMATS Plugin before 4.23 for IrfanView allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a large XPM file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2009. The weakness was disclosed 04/07/2009 by Stefan Cornelius with secunia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0197 since 01/20/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116351 (IrfanView Formats Plug-in XPM Parsing Integer Overflow Vulnerability).
