Details
A vulnerability was found in CPAN Archive Tar Perl Module up to 1.36 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function archive::tar. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the Archive::Tar Perl module 1.36 and earlier allows user-assisted remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a TAR archive that contains a file whose name is an absolute path or has ".." sequences.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2007. The weakness was published 09/21/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4829 since 09/12/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
