Summary
A vulnerability described as very critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.104/6.18.45/7.1.9. This affects an unknown part of the component s390-vfio_ccw. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-80547. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.104/6.18.45/7.1.9. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component s390-vfio_ccw. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/vfio_ccw: Implement a crw lock Unlike the channel_program struct, which covers synchronous I/O submissions and asynchronous interrupts, the CRW region relies exclusively on asynchronous events coming from hardware. Implement a lock to manage the list of those payloads, to ensure they are read cohesively.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-80547 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/26/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.105, 6.18.46 or 7.1.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 49fa26b0df009dc1f420980bd71780e70615b83b/7902be374cbfc11c3435e1e87bf22195bf06a558/c76c4ee72bfc3824f4f491f18ed0323bf2e2daf9/16b0798024c0e9117e395829ddbbe70981c79d9c is able to eliminate this problem.
