Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.9 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function VIDIOC_S_INPUT of the component synaptics-rmi4. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: synaptics-rmi4 - block s_input when F54 queue is busy Changing the input (diagnostic report type) mid-stream changes the report size. Since V4L2 buffers are allocated based on the size at stream start, changing the input while streaming could lead to a heap buffer overflow if the new size is larger than the allocated buffers. Prevent this by blocking VIDIOC_S_INPUT with -EBUSY if the V4L2 queue is busy (streaming).
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-80568 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/26/2026).
