Linux Kernel up to 6.12.104/6.18.45/7.1.9 panthor panthor_fw_load_section_entry null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.104/6.18.45/7.1.9. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function panthor_fw_load_section_entry of the component panthor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/panthor: skip zero-sized firmware sections panthor_fw_load_section_entry() skips BO creation when the firmware section VA range is empty. If such a section is added to the firmware section list, section->mem is left as NULL. Later reload and unplug paths iterate over all firmware sections and dereference section->mem, which can lead to a NULL pointer dereference. Zero-sized firmware sections are valid, so accept them as no-op entries but skip adding them to the section list.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-80577 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/26/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.105, 6.18.46 or 7.1.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f0f3c3922db981031733a25c51e1f37cf9b9e251/25556a46ae6ecf2a9f1c1c5096828eecd4596b91/5d222b657f02a37f658e4e21925b85b4703855e7/2b8f13d3c7e26c46c20d9e367904cf01729c88e6 is able to eliminate this problem.
