Details
A vulnerability was found in Denx U-Boot and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component ZFS Filesystem Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in Denx U-Boot before 2026.04. An integer overflow vulnerability in the ZFS filesystem support can be triggered by malformed on-disk metadata. The issue may result in incorrect memory allocation followed by out-of-bounds memory access, potentially leading to a crash or arbitrary code execution during the boot process.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-70290 since 01/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/29/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 341553 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-70290), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
