NLTK up to 3.10.2 FeatStructReader nltk.featstruct.FeatStructReader recursion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in NLTK up to 3.10.2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nltk.featstruct.FeatStructReader of the component FeatStructReader. Executing a manipulation can lead to recursion. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-81724. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in NLTK up to 3.10.2 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function nltk.featstruct.FeatStructReader of the component FeatStructReader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

NLTK before 3.10.3 contains an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in nltk.featstruct.FeatStructReader that allows unauthenticated attackers to cause a denial of service by supplying deeply nested feature-structure input. Attackers can craft trivial payloads with nested brackets that exceed Python's recursion limit and raise an unhandled RecursionError, crashing applications that parse user-supplied feature structures or feature grammars.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-81724 since 08/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 341150 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-81724), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (341150). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
