Details
A vulnerability has been found in SUSE wicked up to 0.6.80 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ni_capture_inspect_udp_header of the file src/capture.c of the component DHCPv4 Packet Capture. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer underflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-191. The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
An integer underflow was found in the DHCPv4 packet capture code of wicked. ni_capture_inspect_udp_header() in src/capture.c does not verify that the IP total length field (ip_len) is at least as large as the IP header length (ihl) before subtracting the header length. An unauthenticated attacker on the same network can thereby trigger an out-of-bounds read past the receive buffer in the wicked DHCPv4 client (wickedd-dhcp4), which can crash the daemon depending on the process memory layout. No information disclosure has been demonstrated. This issue affects wicked up to and including version 0.6.80.
The advisory is shared at bugzilla.suse.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-71401 since 08/06/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/27/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
