Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 ieee802154 cfg802154_switch_netns allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function cfg802154_switch_netns of the component ieee802154. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ieee802154: Avoid calling WARN_ON() on -ENOMEM in cfg802154_switch_netns() It's pointless to call WARN_ON() in case of an allocation failure in dev_change_net_namespace() and device_rename(), since it only leads to useless splats caused by deliberate fault injections, so avoid it. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with Syzkaller.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-80616 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/28/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 6.18.40 or 7.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f4860dd988b1041d70595f2ed84de80f90cb7ebc/6fcba77571c53f656a2f109259601a7570d4c74a/0569f67ed6a7af838e2141da93c68e6b6013f483 is able to eliminate this problem.
