Linux Kernel accel-amdxdna null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel and classified as problematic. This affects the function xdna_mailbox_free_channel/xdna_mailbox_stop_channel of the component accel-amdxdna. Such manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-80657. The attack needs to be performed locally. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this issue is the function xdna_mailbox_free_channel/xdna_mailbox_stop_channel of the component accel-amdxdna. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: accel/amdxdna: Guard management mailbox channel cleanup against NULL pointer The management mailbox channel cleanup helpers can be called from error handling paths when mgmt_chann has already been destroyed. Add NULL checks to xdna_mailbox_free_channel() and xdna_mailbox_stop_channel() so the cleanup path safely returns instead of dereferencing a NULL mailbox channel pointer.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-80657 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Applying the patch 83d6d375f357ed2702b28d739511aad56d485de7 is able to eliminate this problem.
