Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.43/7.1.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function iommufd_vdevice_alloc_ioctl of the component iommufd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a locking vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-667. The product does not properly acquire or release a lock on a resource, leading to unexpected resource state changes and behaviors. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iommufd/viommu: Release the igroup lock on the vdevice_size error path iommufd_vdevice_alloc_ioctl() takes idev->igroup->lock, then validates the driver's vdevice_size against the core structure size with a WARN_ON_ONCE. On failure that guard jumps to out_put_idev, below out_unlock_igroup, so it skips the mutex_unlock(), leaving the igroup lock held and deadlocking the next vDEVICE operation on that group. Jump to out_unlock_igroup instead.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-80687 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/28/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.44 or 7.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 294b464b2be7e57872864cb6936e1d9c7294f89d/ca9e49e1c8931a4e6e743a1f1d2e7f977f774b86/339bd11591593ab7ce88136ab7fd01ef3813b724 is able to eliminate this problem.
