Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7. This vulnerability affects the function fdt_scan_reserved_mem of the component reserved_mem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: of: reserved_mem: prevent OOB when too many dynamic regions are defined On boot, fdt_scan_reserved_mem() saves each dynamically-placed /reserved-memory subnode into a local array of size MAX_RESERVED_REGIONS. If the device tree defines more than MAX_RESERVED_REGIONS dynamically-placed regions, fdt_scan_reserved_mem() writes past the end of the local array. Add a bounds check that logs an error and skips the excess regions, restoring the original behavior.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-80723 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/28/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.103, 6.18.44 or 7.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 68d27250c9e81ab7764603e346c2b1017cb53adf/cfa7e2734877330d6c10e0f33953905486c4530c/de8ccbd6bf4efe7a059e2c483789936009e10f42/db3dbdfea1b8f38774419c5c2c14e4b81c48708d is able to eliminate this problem.
