Details
A vulnerability has been found in py-pdf pypdf up to 6.14.x and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function read_until_whitespace of the file pypdf/_utils.py. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.15.0, an attacker can craft a PDF that causes long runtimes when the pypdf/_utils.py function read_until_whitespace reads a stream containing a long run of bytes without whitespace. The function repeatedly performs immutable bytes concatenation in a one-byte loop, causing quadratic processing cost for the long non-whitespace input. This issue is fixed in version 6.15.0.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-82398 since 08/29/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 6.15.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
