Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 3.2.3 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing in the library libxml of the component XML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the xmlParseAttValueComplex function in parser.c in libxml2 before 2.7.0 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a long XML entity name.
The weakness was published 05/13/2009 with Apple as HT3550 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3529 since 08/07/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Kevin Finisterre and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67167 (Solaris 9 (sparc) : 127681-07), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115942 (Red Hat libxml2 Security Update (RHSA-2008:0884-3)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45085), Exploit-DB (8798), Tenable (67167), SecurityFocus (BID 31126†) and OSVDB (49993†).
