Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component AFP backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in the AFP backend in gvfs. When mounting a share, a malicious AFP server can cause the DSI read path to process a length that exceeds the size requested by the client. The function does not verify the server-provided length against the pre-sized reply buffer, causing the operation to access past the intended boundaries. This issue allows a malicious server to overflow a heap buffer and crash the gvfsd-afp process, resulting in a denial of service.

The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-84269 since 09/01/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/01/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
