A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 7/8/9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing in the library CDE-DtHelp-Library. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in CDE libDtHelp library allows local users to execute arbitrary code via (1) a modified DTHELPUSERSEARCHPATH environment variable and the Help feature, (2) DTSEARCHPATH, or (3) LOGNAME.
The bug was discovered 03/04/2004. The weakness was presented 11/04/2003 by Kevin Kotas (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0834 since 09/29/2003. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
