Apple iTunes up to 8.2 Protocol memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iTunes up to 8.2 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Apple iTunes before 8.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via an itms: URL with a long URL component after a colon.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2009. The weakness was published 06/02/2009 by Rob King with TippingPoint as HT3592 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0950 since 03/18/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by ryujin and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38986 (Apple iTunes < 8.2 itms: URI Handling Overflow (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116445 (Apple iTunes "itms:" URI Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (APPLE-SA-2009-06-01-2)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8013.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50899), Exploit-DB (8934), Tenable (38986), SecurityFocus (BID 35157†) and OSVDB (54833†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
