Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Advanced Custom Fields Extended Plugin. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Front-End Forms Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended WordPress plugin before 0.9.2.7 does not verify that the requester is authorized to edit the targeted user account in the update-user action of its front-end Forms module; it only checks a capability when the submitted role is administrator or super_admin. On a site that exposes a publicly reachable front-end form whose user-update action targets an existing administrator (a fixed target, or one mapped to a visitor-submitted field) and maps the password to a visitor-submitted field, an unauthenticated visitor can overwrite that administrator's password and take over the account. The default target is the submitting user, so exploitation depends on the form being configured to target another account.
The advisory is shared for download at wpscan.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-12526 since 06/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading to version 0.9.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
