Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.103/6.18.44/7.1.8. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function tb_consumed_dp_bandwidth of the component thunderbolt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: thunderbolt: Fix bandwidth group reservation indexing Valid bandwidth group IDs range from 1 through MAX_GROUPS, while Group ID 0 is reserved. tb_consumed_dp_bandwidth() uses the Group ID directly to index its local group_reserved[] array. The array currently has MAX_GROUPS entries, so its valid indices are 0 through MAX_GROUPS - 1. Group ID MAX_GROUPS therefore accesses one element past the end, and the final group's reserved bandwidth is not included when the array is summed. Give group_reserved[] MAX_GROUPS + 1 entries so direct Group ID indexing covers the reserved ID 0 and valid IDs 1 through MAX_GROUPS.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-80736 since 08/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/03/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.104, 6.18.45 or 7.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0bfb67ba366cd68d1d0ad935760577bae1d5df27/9977321835c7ae71d12a43bed7baa5bd514d01c3/0a8c9ed4f166216642a8c084f0de415169c88088/d2ee4d47aacbd2ba456092eeec670dba35fde291 is able to eliminate this problem.
