OpenStack Location API server-side request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenStack and classified as critical. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Location API. The manipulation leads to server-side request forgery. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-71198. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenStack (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Location API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In OpenStack Glance before 32.0.1, the location API does not validate destination hosts when adding an HTTP location to an image. Unlike the web-download import path, the location API only checks the URL scheme and does not apply the import_filtering_opts host restrictions. An authenticated user can add a location pointing to internal endpoints such as the cloud metadata service (169.254.169.254), and retrieve the response by downloading the image data. This affects both the new POST /v2/images/{id}/locations API and the old PATCH API when show_multiple_locations is enabled. Deployments with the HTTP store backend enabled are affected.

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-71198. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/23/2026).
