Linux Kernel up to 7.1.10/7.2.0 Rapoo to_usb_interface out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.10/7.2.0. Impacted is the function to_usb_interface of the component Rapoo. This manipulation causes out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-80769. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.10/7.2.0. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function to_usb_interface of the component Rapoo. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: rapoo: fix missing hid_is_usb() check to_usb_interface() can only be used on a hid_device whose parent is really USB; uhid can create devices that identify as being on BUS_USB, but don't actually have a USB parent. Fix the use of to_usb_interface() without a hid_is_usb() check. Add a dependency on USB_HID for hid_is_usb(), as other HID drivers do; the alternative would be to provide a simple stub implementation on !USB_HID builds. I have verified that it is currently possible to trigger a kernel splat due to this bug in an ASAN build, and that this commit fixes the issue.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-80769 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 7.1.11, 7.2.1 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 99ed3febafe0452994620a4d819f595583289bec/49b6fd28fbcc0b6457e16e25c7617f63449d4808/b57af2448268c30c25509a832b6ff6dc27176b28 is able to eliminate this problem.
