Linux Kernel up to 7.2.2 mxs-dcp mxs_dcp_aes_block_crypt buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.2. The affected element is the function mxs_dcp_aes_block_crypt of the component mxs-dcp. The manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-80831. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.2. Affected is the function mxs_dcp_aes_block_crypt of the component mxs-dcp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: mxs-dcp - fix source scatterlist length access mxs_dcp_aes_block_crypt() uses sg_dma_len() without mapping the source scatterlist with dma_map_sg() first. Therefore, sg_dma_len() is invalid and could return zero or a stale DMA length, causing encryption and decryption to process the wrong number of bytes when CONFIG_NEED_SG_DMA_LENGTH=y. Use the original scatterlist length instead.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-80831 since 08/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/04/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.269, 5.15.220, 6.1.187, 6.6.156, 6.12.108, 6.18.49, 7.1.13, 7.2.3 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fd0f211b27a6ec2ebd8c315683401b43adcc5511/04201dcc88b26eac52f736e39727fc5c420b7257/e72a795df521cb65b7c4705cc11078cdacfaa2f4/1537bd55b4f842565068c54b47cd2ae1777d5f8f/da14fae5203b72ca71ccfa9af8de9249e40d533a/182f16a20d329a1c818d51dad57d9bf43d356c7c/0e9edb108a63bbbef952dfcbc597e34ed9c1fb74/6ef9a4afb52cb102ab038cd42352c142d8505d09/c5bcb084a9871e5b62afb5f48b60adfa13b5d9f8 is able to eliminate this problem.
