Summary
A vulnerability labeled as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7. This vulnerability affects the function vmw_shader_define of the component vmwgfx. Executing a manipulation of the argument offset can lead to integer overflow.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-80887. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function vmw_shader_define of the component vmwgfx. The manipulation of the argument offset with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/vmwgfx: use check_add_overflow for shader size+offset bound vmw_shader_define() validates the user-supplied shader window against its backing buffer with (u64)buffer->tbo.base.size < (u64)size + (u64)offset drm_vmw_shader_create_arg::offset is __u64 in the uapi; when it is near U64_MAX the unsigned addition wraps and the resulting tiny value passes the check. The unbounded offset is then stored in res->guest_memory_offset and forwarded to host SVGA shader-create commands. Use check_add_overflow() to detect the wrap and compare the resulting endpoint against the buffer size.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-80887 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/04/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44 or 7.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1bbe7751f5ebac383405ef29a66622d65bd505d3/d3f44438aa805270aaead3b6840ccaea0f4c11f9/cfd163169af3be56eaef113c680ea251f0d09189/5c725901908eb1e52a16fc0e2373cb761df42d21/54d56d5b42d2e4c72ba6e365e9774da90698aa22 is able to eliminate this problem.
