Sun Solaris 10.0 Filesystem race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Sun Solaris 10.0 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the Fibre Channel protocol (fcp) driver and Devices filesystem (devfs) in Sun Solaris 10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via some programs that access hardware resources, as demonstrated by the (1) cfgadm and (2) format programs.

The bug was discovered 11/29/2007. The weakness was shared 11/29/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-6216. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1033 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29208 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 128492-01), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115693 (Sun Solaris 10 FCP(7D) and DEVFS(7FS) Local Denial of Service Vulnerability (1000136.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (29208), SecurityFocus (BID 26653†), OSVDB (40826†), Secunia (SA27867†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1019025†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
