Details
A vulnerability has been found in Tcpdump Group libpcap up to 1.10.6 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component BPF Interpreter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
libpcap BPF interpreter treats the offset in the 'ja L' BPF instruction as a signed integer to implement looping via backward jumps, but it does not limit the number of loop iterations. In particular uncommon use cases a crafted filter program can cause the interpreter to loop infinitely.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-6554 since 04/18/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
