Tcpdump Group libpcap up to 1.10.6 BPF Interpreter buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Tcpdump Group libpcap up to 1.10.6. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component BPF Interpreter. The manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-31912. An attack has to be approached locally. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Tcpdump Group libpcap up to 1.10.6. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component BPF Interpreter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

libpcap BPF interpreter detects neither reaching the end of the filter program buffer due to lack of a return instruction nor executing a jump instruction with an offset that translates to a pointer outside of the buffer. In particular uncommon use cases a crafted filter program can cause the interpreter to try reading the OS process memory in the 32GiB around the buffer on 64-bit architectures and in the entire address space on 32-bit architectures.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31912 since 03/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 343122 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31912), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.10.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (343122) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-72016). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
