Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in XenForo up to 2.3.12. This affects an unknown function of the component Style Archive Importer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
XenForo before 2.3.13 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the style archive importer on Windows deployments that allows authenticated non-super administrators with style permissions to write arbitrary files outside the intended extraction directory by using backslash-based traversal sequences in ZIP member names. Attackers can craft a malicious ZIP archive with backslash path separators that bypass forward-slash validation to write arbitrary bytes to any web-server-writable path, including the public web root, achieving persistent code execution as the web-server account.
It is possible to read the advisory at xenforo.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-74239 since 08/14/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy.
