Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1; Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2; and Internet Explorer 7 and 8 for Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, and Server 2008 Gold and SP2 do not properly handle attempts to access deleted objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML document that triggers memory corruption, aka "Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 07/28/2009 by Peter Vreugdenhil with iDefense as MS09-034 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1917 since 06/04/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40407 (MS09-034: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (972260)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8357.
