Details
A vulnerability was found in PeerCast 0.1211/0.1212/0.1215/0.1217/Svn 344. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function handshakehttp of the file servhs.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the handshakeHTTP function in servhs.cpp in PeerCast 0.1217 and earlier, and SVN 344 and earlier, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long SOURCE request.
The bug was discovered 12/17/2007. The weakness was presented 12/19/2007 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-6454 since 12/19/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32405 (Debian DSA-1583-1 : gnome-peercast - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
