Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x/6 FTP Server NLST memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x/6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component FTP Server. The manipulation of the argument NLST with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the FTP Service in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 through 6.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted NLST (NAME LIST) command that uses wildcards, leading to memory corruption, aka "IIS FTP Service RCE and DoS Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was shared 08/31/2009 by kingcope as MS09-053 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blogs.technet.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3023 since 08/31/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by kingcope and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4108 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40825 (MS09-053: Microsoft IIS FTPd NLST Command Remote Buffer Overflow (975191) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27302 (Microsoft FTP Service for Internet Information Services Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-053 and KB97519)).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1973. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2196.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52915), Exploit-DB (9541), Zero-Day.cz (387), Tenable (40825) and SecurityFocus (BID 36189†). theregister.co.uk is providing further details.
