Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Notes up to 8.5 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component RSS Widget. The manipulation as part of a Feed leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The RSS reader widget in IBM Lotus Notes 8.0 and 8.5 saves items from an RSS feed as local HTML documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary script in Internet Explorer s Local Machine Zone via a crafted feed, aka SPR RGAU7RDJ9K.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2009. The weakness was released 09/08/2009 by Marc Ruef with scip AG as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure/Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with IBM. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3114 since 09/09/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A private exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 154 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 901014 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 8.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at ibm.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Mozilla Thunderbird as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53101), Tenable (901014), SecurityFocus (BID 36305†), OSVDB (57935†) and Secunia (SA36813†).
