Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function zlib_deflate_workspacesize of the component zram. The manipulation of the argument deflate winbits with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: zram: validate deflate params We must validate user-supplied deflate winbits before we pass it to zlib_deflate_workspacesize(), which triggers BUG_ON() if winbits value is outside of valid ranges.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89716 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
