Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3 Thunderbolt tbt_altmode_remove use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function tbt_altmode_remove of the component Thunderbolt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: typec: thunderbolt: Disable work before freeing tbt on remove tbt_altmode_remove() drops the plug and cable references without draining tbt->work. The work function dereferences those references, and can also requeue itself in its error path. The VDM callbacks can queue the same work item. Disable and drain tbt->work before dropping the references. This waits for an existing invocation and prevents subsequent schedule_work() calls from queueing it during teardown. This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool and confirmed by manual code review.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89737 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ebb840d982a612261cfc8a7687735a140c6c7024/0a25484fe22f621e151367a59a82330a22ac80bc/92090f6ff2acc81e9dd99881dcfb4f8c1bdaabd3 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
